Pua'a Nui & My Inspiration...

I get asked a lot why I chose "Pua'a Nui" as my shop name and why a lot of my pieces are tropical themed. I chose Pua'a Nui because I found the Pua'a, Hawaiian boar, to be fascinating when I lived in Hawai'i. There are many legends of Kamapua'a and I think that the Humuhumunukunukuapua'a is a beautiful fish. Nui can mean big, large or great in Hawaiian and I would really love my art to become a big deal.

As for the tropical theme in my art and my shop, I have pretty much always been enamored with Hawai'i. I blame it on the fact that my Mom and Dad took a trip to Hawai'i when I was in my Mother's belly. When I was little, people would ask me where my favorite place in the world was and I would reply, "Hawai'i." Even though I had never been there. My first visit to Hawai'i was for my sixteenth birthday to visit my Aunt on Kauai. I could not have asked for a better sixteenth birthday than that.

Going to college in Hawai'i fueled my passion for the place. I would spend hours and hours gazing at the ocean and snorkeling. I loved to observe the fish, and being an artist it was so visually stimulating to see all the different colors of fish that are in the ocean! The hiking is just as interesting as swimming in the ocean. The plants, flowers, birds, and waterfalls there are so different from where I grew up that I couldn't help but be excited about it all. It would have been very difficult for me not to have been inspired by all the beauty around me.

In most everything I create I love to combine the bright colors and textures that I was inspired by in Hawai'i. In a lot of the descriptions of my pieces I like to tell you all what it was that the piece either reminds me of or what I was inspired by to create the piece.

I wonder if other people see the same things or if the pieces remind them of something in their own lives. Please feel free to share if any of my pieces remind you of things in your life!

Oh and I started a new oil painting today! Here's a pic of it so far:

Mahalo for reading!
