Twas The Night Before Christmas, Hawai'i Pidgin Style

Was da night befo Chreesmess when all tru da hale,
Not one crecha was stirring not even one `iole,
Da Kakini stay hang on the puka wit caya
Wit hopes dat Santa Claus soon would be dea.
Da keiki wen moemoe on top of da bed
while crackseed and mochi stay dance in deh head.
Mama in her muumuu and I in my malo,
were just finishing off da aku bone and kalo,
Wen outside da hale I heard one beeg clatta
I jumped from da table fo see whats da matta
quick tru da lumi i went like one flash
I opened the puka and run out on da grass
The moon wen shine down on da ocean so clea
gave a lusta to da wata, like frosty root bea.
When what to my maka should I suddenly see
but a double hulled canoe and eight giant mahimahi.
Wit one tiny old paddla, so lively and quick,
That I knew in one minute gotta be St Nick.
More fas dane one mo`o his i`a dey came
an he screaming and yelling and calling dey name
Now Kini, now Kimo, now Kale and Moke,
On Ha`a, on Umi on Limu and Loke,
sweem ova da waves by da light of da moon,
now wait in da wata, I gon come back soon.
Like pupu they stay on da deep ocean flooa
when da wata stat swirling dey come to da shore
so up to the village in Honolulu
with a canoe full of toys and Santa Claus too.
An den in one twinkle, I heard on da wall,
da mele and hula, soun like half-time futball
As I run in da hale and just turn aroun
down came da beeg guy, some tree hundred fifty pound.
He was dress in one malo and kihei all in red
wit one matching papale on top of his head
one package of toys he had trown on his back
and mango and papaya in a lauhala pack
his maka, wen twinkle, his deemple so merry
his cheeks was all rosy, his nose like one cherry
his waha niho ole, was smilin so beeg
and da beard on his `auwae was smoothe as one peeg
he had one tan face, and a beeg fat opu
that shook when he laugh, like a bowl of pipi stew
he was oh so momona, a cute ol kane
and I wen laugh wen I see him, he jus look so funny
One wink of his eye and one twis of his head
soon went let me know I had noting to dread,
he spoke not one word but wen shtraight to his work
filling all the kakini; then he turn wit one jerk
and he wen put his finga on da side of his ihu
and giving one nod ran out to his canoe,
He wen spring on top his noho, an made one beeg whistle
and waway they wen swam like one rocket ship missle
but I heard him wen say on the waves as he go
Mele Kalikimaka, a me hau`oli makahiki hou!

Featured Item of Awesomeness: Treasured Hawai'i Shell Necklace

Today's blog post is about the Treasured Hawai'i Shell Necklace. This necklace is totally one of a kind. Remember in yesterdays post when I talked about how I love collecting broken shells because of the different abstract design that nature creates? Well, the shell displayed on this necklace is a perfect example of what I was talking about!

I'm not quite sure what kind of shell it was. Possibly some kind of cone shell. If any of my readers would like to take a guess that would be awesome!

When I found this shell on the beach on O'ahu, it came with a hole on the top, and two on the sides so that you could see through it. It sat for a while on my workbench staring at me, taunting me to come up with something awesome to create with it. Finally, it dawned on me one day, could have been that I just got done watching a pirates show but that's besides the point, I needed to incorporate stones with it and have it be the central focus on a necklace.

If you look closely at the piece there are not only aquamarine stones making up part of the chain but there are also aquamarines hanging on the inside of the shell. Which makes for hidden treasure! Well, hidden enough treasure!

Today only it's 10% off! Use code T7THSN at checkout!

Featured Item of Awesomeness: White Opihi Earrings

Today's feature are the stunning White Opihi Shell earrings! Hand and nature made, these earrings are one of the pieces that I am most proud of making. If you ever get into jewelry making you will find how difficult it is to set stones in a bezel. Sometimes the jewelry gods are with you and sometimes, well, you'll swear they're sadistic. It's very easy to break a stone while bezel setting it and even easier to break a shell.

When I lived in Hawai'i one of my favorite things was to find shells on the beach. I wouldn't necessarily go out looking for them but if something caught my eye I'm pick it up. When it comes to finding natural objects my artistic-ness shows right on my sleeve. It shows because not only do I appreciate whole shells but I find broken and weathered ones extremely interesting. I LOVE the shapes that nature will mold things into. I love how when shells are burnished down different colors appear. I find nature totally fascinating.

You can tell that these two opihi shells that I used in these earrings were found and not store bought. They don't match perfectly, but that's what makes them completely unique. I couldn't believe that I found two shells that matched as well as these ones do!

The bezel settings are hand made and unique to each of the shells. That's right, I cut the brass and soldered the silver onto it, made their own little loop things (i know very technical terms here) to wire wrap the hooks onto, and then set the shells in them being super careful not to hurt the shells.

Anyway, they were made with all kinds of love and aloha.
Here are some tantalizing photos of them:

They are currently on sale at Pua'a Nui AND they're an extra 10% off today only! Use code 2HSE10 at checkout and they could be on your hot little ears real soon!

I hope you enjoyed hearing a little more about these beauties!

Featured item of awesomeness!

Today's featured awesome item are my Waterfalls and Waves cuff bracelets. Why do I think they're so awesome, you ask, because they fit well and look hot! I always get compliments on mine and they're my #1 seller! I came up with the idea after making cuffs with sheets of metal. I thought to myself, "Why not try something with wire. Using the positive and negative space and creating designs." And so that's what I did and I love them! Each one is slightly different which allows me to be endlessly creative!

Because they're my featured item of awesomeness today I'm giving out a code for 15% off of them on my website for TODAY ONLY! Use code 15WWWC at checkout to get the featured item of awesomeness discount on the Waterfalls and Waves Cuffs!

I hope you love yours as much as I love mine!

Facebook and Twitter Plug-ins, Widgets, Buttons

Aloha Everyone!

You've probably already noticed that at Pua'a Nui I have added Facebook and Twitter like and share buttons/widgets/plug-ins. Whatever you want to call them really. It took me some time to find where on the internet and on each of these sites these things were. I'm going to share this info with you all so that if you ever want to add these things to your site you'll know exactly where to find them!

Apparently, Facebook has a developers section of it. Here is the page that was most helpful for our purposes: http://developers.facebook.com/docs/plugins/ . It's a great list of the Social Plugins that you can add to your blog, shop, or website. The two that I used on my site were the "Like Button" and "Like Box" . The Like button lets users share pages from your site back to their Facebook profile with one click. The Like Box enables users to like your Facebook Page and view its stream directly from your website.  I chose these two because I found them to be the most clean and straight to the point for my purposes.

The page that I found helpful from Twitter was: http://business.twitter.com/optimize/resources/ . The two that I added to my site were the "Follow Button" and "Tweet Button".  I liked the "Follow Button" because it allows people who are on my page to easily follow me on Twitter too. The Tweet Button lets people easily tweet about my site from my page.

I hope you all found this helpful!

Oh! I almost forgot! I have a coupon sale going on at Pua'a Nui right now! 10% off through Labor Day! Use coupon code LABORDAY11 !!

Paintings!

Aloha Everyone!

I know I've been a MIA for the past week but I'm back and I would like to tell you all about some new things going on for Pua'a Nui.

First, I've decided to sale some of my paintings through Pua'a Nui. I've never sold paintings online before so this is a new learning experience for me and I'll keep you all updated on how it goes. I'm starting out with small paintings 8"x10" for hopefully ease of shipping. Once I've figured out all the ins and outs of shipping paintings I'll let you all know how I ship them and I'll probably move up to larger things for sale as well! I know, exciting right?! If any of you have any pointers on shipping paintings I'd love to hear them!

I've been thinking about making prints of my pieces.  What do you think about the idea? Would you buy prints of my pieces? If you have suggestions on good printing methods and such I'd love to hear those too!

Here are some pics of the paintings I have up in my store now!

I hope you enjoyed reading my blog and taking a look at my new paintings! Click on their titles to go to their pages in Pua'a Nui!

Aloha!

What a GREAT day!

Today was fantastic! Lono and I started the day by stopping at Edible Arrangements for our free Daisy Pop (pineapple dipped in chocolate) that we got from a eat healthier promo they were doing on FB! Oh my chocolate dipped pineapple goodness! Those things were fantastic! The right amount of tart, sweet, savory and the best way to start the day I have to say!

Next stop was one of the bead shops near the house. I had called previously to see if they had something in stock that I needed and I don't think the woman on the phone understood what I said because she said "Yes, we have it. It's $10." But when I got there they didn't have it. Luckily we didn't have to travel far to that shop.

So, we headed up to Auburn to Altemont which is one of my favorite bead shops locally. I bought some new pliers that will make my world of bending wire easier. Some chain and some wire. I was also pleasantly surprised when I got the the checkout counter and the woman said "Pick one!" and handed me a bucket to pick a piece of paper out of! I got 45% off of the price of my pliers! YEAH!!

We cruised around Old Town Auburn for a bit and then decided to get home so I could get workin' on things to show you all in my store.

The following pictures are showing off the new things that I made! I also started a new line in my store called the "Kai" collection! They are all shells found by a dear friend of mine in Hawai'i.

Light Orange and White Clam Shell Necklace (this one is SOLD already!)

I have to say it was a highly productive and wonderful day! I hope you all had just as an amazing day as I did!

Stay awesome!

Wish Me Luck!

Today was a VERY eventful and productive day! Days like today make me happy to be an artist.

I finished and faxed in my application for the art walk. I hate telling people these kinds of things 'cause I feel like I'm going to jinx them. But, I feel like I need to start letting those jinxing feelings go and let my friends cheer me one and wish me good luck! 'Cause when you're an artist you can use all the luck you can get! Plus, I really do love sharing the new, exciting, and sometimes nerve racking things that are happening in my life.

I got to spend time with a wonderful friend taking photos for our online stores of our jewelry. She makes some sweet things!

Later on in the day after some shopping at the local art store for some fun new canvas I decided to see how my big cartel shop was doin. So, I logged in to look at my stats. For some reason, unknown to me know, my shop was getting lots and lots of lookers! I wish I knew why I was getting so many views during that time of the day! I would have loved to know if someone mentioned me in a blog or if a friend mentioned me to their friends. I suppose the mystery is part of the fun!

After that excitement, I did some online shopping for some jewelry supplies! I can't wait to get them and make more things for you all to see! Oh, and while I was at said local art store today I had an epiphany for something new to put in the store! You'll just have to wait in anticipation for me to reveal what it is!

I eat, I paint, and I try not to eat my paints.

My Name is Heather Scott. I eat, I paint, and I try not to eat my paints.

I'm feeling much better since my last post. Thanks for asking. So well, actually, that not only was I up till 3am this morning working on a painting but I also baked the most amazing apple pie I've ever eaten in my LIFE.

That flower painting I'm working on is coming along. Layer by layer. It's an oil painting so it's a slow process of layers and letting it dry. Here's another couple of photos of it's progress and a photo showing me actually painting:

I got a bag of green apples and decided that apple pie was the best idea for them. I found a recipe online and tried my hand at making home made apple pie. I have to admit that there have been other failed attempts in apple pie making. There are many ways to go wrong with it, wrong apples, mushy crust, etc. This time though Apple Pie Crust Amazingness was produced. Unfortunately, there aren't any photos of it because, well, it was just too good to take photos of it before it was devoured. I found that the secret to crispy crust. 2tbsp of milk brushed on top of the pie with 2tbsp of sugar and 1tsp cinnamon mixed together and sprinkled on top of the milk that was just brushed on. Then baking at 425 for 10 mins and then 325 for an hour. Perfect pie crust.

August Auburn Art Walk

On Thursday, Lono and I went on the Auburn Art walk here in California. I love going on art walks because it helps me see how diverse artists can be in an area and most of the time they inspire me to go home and make things.

I was inspired by an older gentleman who usually paints Native American inspired murals. He had a GIANT painting which he said was a detail of a greater mural that he did. The largest of his pieces that he had in the gallery was about 12 feet by 28 feet. The thing was massive! He said that he works with acrylic with lots and lots of layers. I found this to be incredible because acrylic and I have a love/hate relationship. It was funny though because while we were talking I told him this and I told him that I do a lot of oil paintings and he said he has the opposite problem that I do.

We moved on to other galleries and I noticed a lot of the galleries had the same artists that I saw last year with a lot of the same art. I don't mind when artists show the same art sometimes but when it's been a year since I've seen their art I kind of expect to see some new things.

I did ask how to become a featured artist for next year, as there is only one more Auburn Art walk this year. So, let's hope that I'll be in one of those spaces bringing something a little new and fresh to the scene!

One of the other things that deserves mention is the food at the galleries. I know, I know, I'm supposed to be talking more about art. But, when you have a show or opening of a show the food is almost as important. Food helps to keep people in your space looking at your work and mingling. Some of the deliciousness that deserves recognition at the art walk was: white and dark chocolate drizzled strawberries, these amazing cupcakes that were white cake and strawberry creme filled, shrimp cocktail, lime and mint flavored water, and those ham and cheese deli wraps cut into slices.

If you are interested in attending the next Auburn Art Walk the final one this year is on October 14th from 6pm-9pm! Hope to see you there!

Pua'a Nui & My Inspiration...

I get asked a lot why I chose "Pua'a Nui" as my shop name and why a lot of my pieces are tropical themed. I chose Pua'a Nui because I found the Pua'a, Hawaiian boar, to be fascinating when I lived in Hawai'i. There are many legends of Kamapua'a and I think that the Humuhumunukunukuapua'a is a beautiful fish. Nui can mean big, large or great in Hawaiian and I would really love my art to become a big deal.

As for the tropical theme in my art and my shop, I have pretty much always been enamored with Hawai'i. I blame it on the fact that my Mom and Dad took a trip to Hawai'i when I was in my Mother's belly. When I was little, people would ask me where my favorite place in the world was and I would reply, "Hawai'i." Even though I had never been there. My first visit to Hawai'i was for my sixteenth birthday to visit my Aunt on Kauai. I could not have asked for a better sixteenth birthday than that.

Going to college in Hawai'i fueled my passion for the place. I would spend hours and hours gazing at the ocean and snorkeling. I loved to observe the fish, and being an artist it was so visually stimulating to see all the different colors of fish that are in the ocean! The hiking is just as interesting as swimming in the ocean. The plants, flowers, birds, and waterfalls there are so different from where I grew up that I couldn't help but be excited about it all. It would have been very difficult for me not to have been inspired by all the beauty around me.

In most everything I create I love to combine the bright colors and textures that I was inspired by in Hawai'i. In a lot of the descriptions of my pieces I like to tell you all what it was that the piece either reminds me of or what I was inspired by to create the piece.

I wonder if other people see the same things or if the pieces remind them of something in their own lives. Please feel free to share if any of my pieces remind you of things in your life!

Oh and I started a new oil painting today! Here's a pic of it so far:

Why I am an Artist.

I have encountered many people in my life who have asked me the following question: "Why did you decide to become an artist?"

A lot of the time I tell people, "I became an artist because it is what makes me happy and comes naturally to me." I'm not sure how many of these people understand it. So, I suppose I'll elaborate a bit on it tonight.

As soon as I could hold a crayon in my hand I was drawing and creating. When I was in elementary school I was able to draw many of the Disney characters by hand. In the first grade I won first place in my class for a watercolor I created. This piece is still at my parents house but maybe one of these days I'll post a photo of it here for you all to see.

In high school, I took every art class I could. We even had a summer art class that was for "gifted art students" instead of for students that failed art. I went to Colfax high school in Colfax, CA. My art teacher, Mr. Coverston, encouraged students to try new mediums and he taught the basics from spheres to landscapes and portraits. While in high school I entered the CA state fair where I earned 2nd place for the first watercolor I had ever attempted.

Then came college and I got a little discombobulated. I let other people's parents get into my head instead of listening to my own parents who wholeheartedly told me to follow my passion as an artist. I changed my major from art to business to e-business to international business and finally my Mom told me on the phone, "YOU are miserable in just your business classes. Go take a painting class, it's what you love."

After I fell back in love with my art again, my Mom told me that it was okay that I took all those other classes because, "College is where you figure out what you don't want to do in addition to what you do want to do."

I ended up changing my major from international business back to Studio Art and I am so happy that I did.

Art is just one of those things that runs through my veins, pours out of my personality, and it melts out of my fingertips into every piece I work on.
